Residential Opt-Out

FirstEnergy’s Ohio electric companies offer residential customers the option to opt-out of having a smart meter.

If you have been notified that your meter will be replaced with a smart meter, and you do not wish to have a smart meter installed, there is a $28.29 monthly meter reading charge for manually reading your meter.

If you currently have a smart meter and wish to opt-out, you:

  1. May have the smart meter removed, and there is a one-time up-front charge of $41.72 to exchange the smart meter for a digital non-communicating meter as well as the $28.29 monthly meter reading charge; or

  2. May choose to have the transmitter (communication card) in the smart meter disabled and avoid the meter exchange charge of $41.72, though the monthly meter reading charge of $28.29 still applies.

These charges were approved by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio in Case Number 20-385-EL-ATA*.

Customers can opt back in at any point after opting out. Please contact us at 855-344-3400 if you wish to do so.

If you are currently enrolled in a product or service requiring a smart meter as a condition of enrollment, (such as a time differentiated rate), you must choose a different product or service prior to opting out.

The Company may refuse to provide smart meter opt-out service in either of the following circumstances:

(a) If such a service creates a safety hazard to consumers or their premises, the public or the electric utility's personnel or facilities.

(b) If a customer does not allow the Company’s employees or agents access to the meter at the customer's premises.

Smart meter opt-out service is not offered to non-residential customers in Ohio.

Be assured that the smart meter technology being implemented has been rigorously tested and demonstrated by manufacturers to be accurate, safe and secure in systems throughout the country. If you have any questions about your installation, please call 855-344-3400.
