Renewable Energy Credits
If you own a renewable energy resource you have the ability to convert power into a tradable Renewable Energy Certificate (REC). A REC is created for every megawatt-hour, or every 1,000 kilowatt-hours, of electricity generated and is the commodity traded in compliance markets in states that have Renewable Portfolio Standards programs. Follow the steps below to get started.
FirstEnergy Registration
Generation owners who plan to interconnect to the grid with the purpose of selling excess electrical energy to the wholesale market must register with FirstEnergy.
State Registration
Register with your state utility commission to certify your facility.
Renewable Energy Credit Assignment
Once state certification is received, you must also register with an attribute tracking system to have the ability to generate RECs.
Renewable Energy Credit Production
Generation data must then be submitted to an attribute tracking system such as PJM GATS to receive credit for the RECs that you have generated.
Renewable Energy Credit Sales
Once you are credited for generating RECs in an attribute tracking system you will have the opportunity to monetize those RECs.
FirstEnergy may solicit proposals for Solar Renewable Energy Credits and Renewable Energy Credits in your area for the purposes of complying with renewable energy and solar energy resource requirements.
