Choosing an Electric Generation Supplier
Now you can choose the company that supplies your electric generation supply - just as you can shop for other products and services. The Ohio Customer Choice program provides information to help you make the decision that is right for you.
In the past, your electric distribution utility - either The Illuminating Company, Ohio Edison, or Toledo Edison - provided every aspect of your electric service. This included generating the electricity and delivering it to your home or business. Now you can choose the company that supplies the electric generation. All electric generation suppliers, must be certified by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO).
Many things, including delivery, remain the same. For example, if you choose a supplier, your electric distribution utility still delivers the electric service to your home or business, as well as continues to maintain the same poles and wires. And if your power goes out, you should still call your electric distribution utility.

Benefits of Customer Choice
The most important benefit of customer choice is that it lets you shop for your electric generation supplier. This gives you the opportunity to choose a supplier based on what is important to you. For example, you might simply want the lowest price, so you would select the supplier with the lowest charge. Or, you might want to make a choice based on how the electric generation supply is produced.

Shopping for Electricity
Ohio's Electric Choice program lets you choose your supplier of electric generation. Your electric distribution utility - either The Illuminating Company, Ohio Edison, or Toledo Edison - continues to deliver electricity to your home as reliably as always. However, you now have the option of either keeping your electric distribution utility as your electric generation supplier or choosing a different company. To make it easier for you to weigh competing offers and determine your potential savings, your electric bill includes a Price to Compare feature.
What is the Price to Compare?
The Price to Compare is calculated by taking the amount of your Bypassable Generation and Transmission Related Component and dividing it by the total number of kilowatt-hours used for the month. An alternative supplier's price for generation and transmission must be lower than your price to compare for you to save money with that supplier.Where can I find my Price to Compare?
When shopping for a supplier, please keep handy your most recent The Illuminating Company, Ohio Edison, or Toledo Edison bill that includes your Price to Compare. This will make comparing offers easier. The bill also shows your customer number, which a supplier will need to enroll you as their customer. -
Supplier List
To sell electric generation service in Ohio, all electric generation suppliers and aggregators must be certified by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO). Electric generation suppliers and aggregators must also be registered with the local utility to sell electric generation service in that utility's service area.
View the list of licensed electric generation suppliers who are certified with the PUCO and are registered or are pending registration to sell electric generation service in The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company, The Toledo Edison Company, and Ohio Edison Company service territories.
For additional information about energy choice, visit the PUCO's Energy Choice website*.
-
Staying with the Electric Distribution Utility
If you do not choose a supplier, your electric distribution utility - either The Illuminating Company, Ohio Edison, or Toledo Edison - will continue to supply and deliver your electricity. You cannot be switched to a new supplier without your permission. This is called slamming and it is illegal.
