National Electrical Safety Month: A Season of Safety

NESM Lawnmower

Electricity powers our lives, but we must always remember that it can also be dangerous if not treated with care. May is National Electrical Safety Month – a time to focus on the importance of electrical safety and the steps we can take each day to prevent accidents.

At FirstEnergy, safety is a core value. Our dedicated employees work year-round to maintain our electrical system as safely as possible. But safety is not just our responsibility – it's everyone's. That’s why we are committed to educating the public about staying safe around electrical equipment through our Stop. Look. Live campaign. From safely flying a drone and hunting safety, to staying safe around downed power lines and working safely, we offer a wide range of resources and tips to stay safe around electrical infrastructure.

Safety First This Season

You may also encounter hidden dangers around the home, whether you’re working in the yard or staying cool indoors. As you get ready to have fun in the sun this spring and summer, keep safety top of mind with these quick tips:

  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look up and keep yourself and any objects at least 10 feet away from overhead power lines.

  • Keep electrical devices and cords away from water to avoid electrical shocks while swimming or splashing around in the pool.

  • When setting up a swimming pool or trampoline in your yard, make sure they are placed far away from any power lines running overhead or nearby.

  • Make sure to use a surge protector when plugging in outdoor electronics like speakers, TVs or bug zappers to prevent electrical damage during thunderstorms.

  • Don't overload power outlets with too many devices, especially when running air conditioning units, to avoid tripped circuit breakers or electrical fires.

  • Keep grilling areas and other outdoor spaces clear of electrical cords to avoid tripping hazards or accidental electrical shocks.

  • When raising boat masts, launching sailboats or sailing, keep an eye out for overhead powerlines and be sure to avoid contact.

  • Always use extension cords marked for outdoor use when plugging in outdoor power equipment.

  • Make sure all outdoor outlets are GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) protected to prevent electrical shock in wet conditions.

  • Keep kites, toys and drones far away from overhead power lines to avoid electrical shock and prevent power outages. If a toy or drone gets caught in power lines or crashes into a utility pole or substation, never attempt to retrieve it yourself. Call 1-888-LIGHTSS and we’ll get it back for you.

  • Teach children to never climb trees near power lines.

  • Hire a licensed electrician to check your electrical systems and outlets for potential hazards before the summer season begins.
