National Electrical Safety Month: Plugging into Electric Vehicle Safety
Customers across our region are making the switch to electric vehicles (EVs), with many customers plugging into EV chargers for the first time. As part of our commitment to protect the environment, we’re excited to support these customers every step, charge and mile of the way. To help make this journey easier for early adopters, we’ve created EV Driven, where we share tips and resources such as information about available EV models, fuel savings, rebates, public charging locations and more.
With safety top of mind during National Electrical Safety Month (#NESM), we’re continuing our support by sharing these electrical safety tips every EV owner should be aware of:
Only purchase charging devices that are certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory (NTRL).
Have a qualified electrician install a new, dedicated circuit and any necessary equipment for your EV charging device. Older home wiring may not be suitable for use with EV supply equipment.
Follow manufacturer’s guidelines to charge your vehicle and properly conduct maintenance. Contact your local dealer if you have any questions.
Discontinue use if you notice any damage to your charging equipment.
Plug chargers directly into outlets designed to handle the amperage of the device and never try to modify or tamper with the charging equipment or electrical components in your EV.
Do not use an extension cord with your EV charger.
Place all charging device components out of reach of pets and children when not in use.
Cover the EV charging station outlet to stop water from entering.
