We know managing energy costs is important to you. As we work to provide you with the safe, reliable power you need and deserve, we’re also here to offer information and resources to help you take control of your costs. On June 1, 2024, the basic generation service (BGS) charge increased for JCP&L customers. However, there are steps you can take to help manage how much you spend on energy.

When you look at your home electric bill under the section titled ‘Charges from JCP&L,” you’ll notice it’s divided into two parts: a charge for delivering service to your home or business and a separate generation charge (BGS) for the actual electricity you use. For the BGS charge, you can shop for a supplier just as you shop for other products and services. If you are not served by a competitive energy supplier, JCP&L is required to purchase electricity on your behalf, and it is provided to you at cost.

You may be able to save money with a competitive energy supplier. Here’s how to get started:

  • Locate the basic generation charge (BGS) on your latest JCP&L bill. This is the generation charge you’ll use to compare against other offers.
  • Head to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities’ website, NJ Power Switch, for a list of licensed suppliers and their current rates. If you find a supplier that offers a generation rate lower than the current BGS, you may be able to pay less.
  • When choosing a supplier, consider all offer terms carefully, including price, plan structure (fixed or variable rate), contract terms and any applicable taxes, charges and fees.

Whether or not you choose to shop for a competitive energy supplier, you can count on JCP&L to deliver safe, reliable power to your home.

Easy Ways to Save Energy

With summer around the corner, there are other steps you can take in your home each day to help control your energy use and costs. Here are some ideas:

  • Draw blinds, shades or drapes to block the sunlight, especially on south- and west-facing windows.
  • Change air conditioner and furnace fan filters at least every three months, and more often during periods of high demand. Clogged filters waste energy and money by forcing your HVAC system to work harder than necessary.
  • Avoid using heat-producing appliances during the hottest hours of the day. The less heat produced at home, the less work your air conditioner will do.
  • Look around for any openings or cracks around doors and windows. Caulk, weatherstrip or seal any areas that could be letting hot air in and cool air escape.
